Story Behind The Photograph – On The Ground In Mana Pools

This photograph comes from an early morning walk in the famous Mana Pools forests. My group and I found a small clan of hyenas moving between the tall, widely spaced trees. Instead of remaining in the vehicle, we slipped out and lay flat on the ground, waiting as the hyenas approached. The light was still cool and soft, which gave the background its characteristic blue tone.

One cub was especially curious. It moved forward, then back again to check the adult, and then forward once more. Because we stayed low and calm, the clan accepted us and stayed nearby for a long time. That extra time allowed me to work carefully with the natural curves of the trunks and branches. Eventually the cub stepped into a clear patch of light, with the adult placed perfectly behind and the forest melting into soft shapes. I pressed the shutter as it turned its head, catching that single moment when alertness, trust and the magic of Mana Pools all came together.
