The story behind the photograph (Walking in Mana Pools)

I created this image during one of my favorite times of day in Mana Pools, Zimbabwe. There is something completely unreal about walking with elephants in this part of Africa. Because the elephants here are so relaxed, you can experience their presence in a way that is quiet and deeply respectful.

We were on foot when this bull started walking in our direction. Instead of feeling intense, the encounter was incredibly calm. He was simply going about his day, moving through the “blue forest” with a slow, steady rhythm. When he stopped to draw dust up with his trunk and blow it over his back, the whole scene felt like a painting. This is real wildlife photography, captured on the ground, where you can feel the vibration of their footsteps.
