Morning on the Road – Kennedy Pride Cubs, Hwange

Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe is known for its open spaces, dusty roads and big lion prides. In the cool hours after dawn, lions often use the roads as easy paths between hunting areas and waterholes. On this morning, the air was crisp and the light soft when we encountered the Kennedy pride cubs.

They had chosen the middle of the sandy road as their resting place, enjoying the warmth of the ground and the open view. The adults were close by in the grass, but these two youngsters were content to lie and watch the world go by. The lack of harsh shadows and the gentle colours of early morning helped create a dreamy, almost pastel atmosphere.

Story Behind the Photograph – Future Kings

I made this photograph at first light in Hwange National Park, following fresh lion tracks along one of the Kennedy area roads. We rounded a bend and suddenly found the pride spread out across the sand, with these two cubs perfectly placed. I stopped at a respectful distance and waited.

The foreground cub quickly became curious, lifting its head and fixing us with a calm, direct gaze. The second cub remained more relaxed, slipping in and out of focus behind. I used a wide aperture to keep the front cub razor sharp while allowing the background and the second cub to melt into soft blur. This separation gives the image its sense of depth and quiet intimacy.

Future Kings – Lion Cub Photo Print holds that brief, perfect pause when the road was theirs alone and the day was just beginning.
