Story Behind The Photograph – Evening On Long Pool

This photograph was made at Long Pool in Mana Pools, the largest of the inland pools and famous for its high concentration of hippos and crocodiles. The pool stretches for several kilometres, so in the dry season its calm water becomes a magnet for aquatic life and for elephants walking in from the thick bush. By evening, the floating shapes of hippos dot the surface like slow‑moving islands.

On this particular sunset the light fell low and warm across the pool. Dust and humidity turned the air soft, and every tiny ripple on the water caught the glow. I watched this hippo drift away from the main pod into a more open patch, almost as if it wanted some space of its own. It moved without a splash, pushing a quiet wake through the mirrored surface. I framed the scene so that the animal stayed small and still, while the golden reflections filled the rest of the image. That is the moment you see here: a single hippo carried by a river of light.
