Story Behind The Photograph – Storm Light At Nxai Pans

I made this image at Nxai Pans during the dry season, when elephants walk long distances to reach the few waterholes that remain. On this particular evening the sky was changing fast. A bank of thunderclouds built up on the horizon, yet a gap in the clouds let a low shaft of sunlight pour across the open pan.

As the light slipped under the storm, one bull stepped up to drink. The beam of sun caught him perfectly, turning his dusty skin into soft gold while everything behind him dropped into deep blue‑grey shadow. The golden elephant at waterhole lowered his trunk to the surface, drew in water and then let it spill back in a slow, steady stream. The contrast between calm behaviour and dramatic light made the moment unforgettable.

Gold Against Dark Clouds

What I love most here is the colour contrast. The bull glows with warm yellows and browns, while the storm clouds behind him are almost steel blue. Because the surrounding pan is pale and simple, the elephant stands out like a statue lit on a stage. His reflection in the still water adds a second vertical line that leads your eye from the foreground up to his face.

Fine details in his wet ears, trunk and tusks are clearly visible, yet the background stays soft and uncluttered. As a result, the golden elephant at waterhole becomes the undisputed centre of the scene, embodying both strength and vulnerability in this harsh, dry landscape.
