Story Behind The Photograph – Neighbours At The Den

This photograph was made at a hyena den not far from where I live near Victoria Falls. Over time I have watched this family raise their youngsters, and it has been amazing to see how well they are doing. When the adults are around, the pups stay close to them and use the den as a safe base. As soon as the parents move off to forage, the mood changes. The cubs become bold and inquisitive, testing their world with every step.

On this evening the light was soft and golden, and the pups were full of curiosity. They wandered in and out of the grass, sniffing, listening and watching every small movement. I sat quietly at a respectful distance and let them decide how close they wanted to come. This youngster stepped into a clear patch, paused, and looked back over its shoulder towards me.
