Story Behind The Photograph – Playtime In Amboseli

I made this image in Amboseli, Kenya, on a soft, hazy morning. The herd had been feeding nearby and then started to move, but these two calves turned the simple walk into a game. One stepped ahead, lifted its trunk and swung it wide. The other calf copied the move and hurried to keep up.

As they came towards me, the happy elephant babies drew closer until they almost touched shoulders. Their trunks curled at the tips, their mouths opened in what looks like laughter, and their feet barely seemed to keep up with their excitement. The adults stayed calm in the background, giving the youngsters space to play while still keeping a quiet watch.

Friendship, Movement And Pure Joy

What I love most here is the sense of friendship. The calves lean into each other as they walk, sharing the path and the game. Their body language is open and relaxed, and their raised trunks add a playful rhythm to the scene.

Soft grasses on one side and pale dust on the other create a simple frame, so the happy elephant babies stand out clearly against the gentle colours of Amboseli. Because the background is blurred and light, your eye goes straight to the pair and follows their movement down the track. The mood is bright, carefree and full of life.
