In the open spaces of Makgadikgadi Pans, the desert can look harsh at first sight. However, after the rains, patches of fresh grass appear and the meerkats move through them like tiny shadows. On this morning I was already lying low, waiting and listening, while the group foraged nearby.

Slowly, one young meerkat slipped into the frame, almost hidden by the grass. It paused, lifted its head and looked sideways, as if it was weighing up every sound around it. For a brief moment everything felt very quiet. The distant horizon, the soft wind and the tiny figure in front of me all came together. That still, watchful pause is what I wanted to hold in this fine art meerkat print.
