Story Behind The Photograph – Curious Pups On The Open Pan
This image was created at a hyena den set in the middle of an open pan. We were sitting on the ground a respectful distance away, watching as the light softened and the sky turned into gentle pastel bands. At first the clan stayed far out in the pan, adults resting and pups playing near the den entrances.
Hyena pups are naturally curious, and one by one they began to edge closer, drawn by the quiet shapes at the edge of their world. Because we were low and still, they relaxed quickly. Soon several youngsters were standing within perfect range, ears huge against the evening sky. This particular hyena paused, turned to look straight at us and held that expression of pure curiosity for a brief moment. The next frames were full of movement and play, but this one carried the calm magic of first contact.
