Story Behind The Photograph – Hippie, The Camp Hippo

This photograph comes from Mana Pools, where we got to know a young hippo bull we called Hippie. He had been pushed out of the main pod by the dominant male and carried fresh scars from those fights. After that, he spent a lot of time alone and slowly drifted towards our camp on the floodplains. Instead of keeping his distance, he chose our little patch of forest as his refuge.

We noticed that Hippie liked to lie in a shallow ditch near camp. So we made him a bed of leaves there. He accepted it as if it had always been his. Over time he relaxed so much around us that he would even wander up to the dinner table and stand quietly nearby while we ate. It felt unreal to share space with a wild hippo in such a gentle way, always with respect for his comfort and for our safety.

Then the first rains arrived. The dry gullies around camp filled with water, and suddenly Hippie had his very own pond. From that moment his mood changed completely. The lonely young bull who had been pushed out of the pod now had a place that belonged to him. He spent hours in that new pool, rolling, yawning and practising big displays, as if enjoying the freedom to be himself. This image was made during one of those moments, when he threw his head back and sent water flying into the light.
