Story Behind The Photograph

This photograph of a leopard cub lying in the grass belongs to the same Serengeti scene as the pillow and tree images. The two cubs had been playing with the pillow high in the branches. At one point it slipped and dropped to the ground.

One cub jumped down after it. He landed in the long grass, still full of energy, then froze for a moment and looked back up at his sibling. I underexposed the frame on purpose. As a result, the shaded grass and background went dark. His face, however, sat in a narrow band of sunlight.

In this frame the leopard cub lying in the grass lifts his head, eyes fixed on the tree above. The bright patch of light shapes his whiskers and cheeks, while the rest of his body melts into the soft shadows. It was a brief pause in the play, but it gave a very quiet, intimate portrait of a young predator.

The strength of this image comes from contrast. The blades of grass form a loose curtain in the foreground. Behind them, the cub’s face appears almost like a spotlight. The viewer sees his expression first, then only slowly notices the rest of the body.
