Story Behind The Photograph

This photograph of a leopard cub playing in a tree was made in Tanzania’s Serengeti during a quiet afternoon drive. We were scanning the plains when we noticed two small shapes moving among the branches of an old tree. As we came closer, it became clear that they were young leopard cubs who had climbed up to investigate something unusual.

The cubs had found a pillow lodged in the fork of the tree, most likely blown in from a distant camp. For them it became an instant toy. One cub pressed his paws into it, biting and kicking, while the other watched closely from the side. Every few moments they swapped roles, taking turns to wrestle with their strange treasure.

In this frame, the leopard cub playing in a tree pauses for a second, front paws resting on the trunk as he looks out over the Serengeti. The soft light catches his whiskers and the edges of his ears, while the deep bark behind him turns almost black. I pressed the shutter here to balance the playful story with a classic, calm pose. It is one small chapter in a longer narrative that I share in my series A Leopard’s Tale on the blog.

What I love about this image is the mix of curiosity and confidence. The cub is clearly young, but he already moves with the assurance of a future Serengeti hunter. The strong verticals of the tree frame his body, and the dark hollows around him make the warm tones of his coat stand out. You can imagine him pouncing back onto the pillow the moment the camera drops.
