Story Behind The Photograph

This photograph of a leopard cub resting on a tree branch was made in Tanzania’s Serengeti, during the same sighting as the playful pillow image from my series A Leopard’s Tale. After a burst of energy in the branches, one cub climbed higher and settled into a wide fork in the tree.

For a while he watched the plains below, alert and curious. Then the warmth of the afternoon and the safety of the high branch began to take over. The leopard cub stretched out along the bark, front legs slipping down on either side, tail relaxed, head resting just above the curve of the trunk. Patches of sunlight moved across his coat, creating a soft pattern of dappled light on rosettes and whiskers.

I made this frame while the leopard cub resting on a tree branch looked straight toward us, half awake and half drifting into sleep. The clean blue sky behind him removes all distraction, turning the tree into a simple line and the cub into the clear centre of the story.

What makes this image special is the contrast between the cub’s youth and his confident comfort in the tree. Many people think of leopards as tense, hidden hunters, but here you see a completely different side: a youngster who has already learned where to find shade, safety and a good view. The strong diagonal of the branch, combined with the relaxed pose of the leopard cub resting on a tree branch, creates a design that works beautifully as wall art.
