Story Behind The Photograph – Leopard Cub With Its Mother

This photograph of a leopard cub with its mother comes from South Luangwa, Zambia. It was late afternoon, so the light was soft and warm. The cubs had been hidden during the day. Then they started to creep out to play.

Their mother lay close by. She felt relaxed with me and the car, and she began to clean and lick the youngsters. The cubs were very inquisitive. They sniffed the leaves, climbed over her legs and often glanced toward the vehicle. For me this was a special moment, because it was the first time I had ever seen leopard cubs this young.

Photographing them, however, was not easy. Most of the time they hid between bushes and branches. Every now and then a small gap opened. In this frame the leopard cub with its mother lies in a clear patch of leaves, looking straight at the camera while she bends down behind him. The warm light shapes his ears and whiskers and picks up every tiny rosette.

Young Curiosity Beside Calm Strength

What I love here is the contrast between calm and curiosity. The mother focuses on grooming and stays completely at ease. The cub, in contrast, is alert and wide eyed. He seems to study the new world outside the bushes. As a result, this leopard cub with its mother becomes a strong portrait of early life in the African bush.

For collectors, the image works very well alongside more independent leopard portraits. Together they show the full story, from first weeks at the den to life as a confident adult.
