Story Behind The Photograph

This photograph of a leopard resting high in a tree is part of the same Serengeti story as the two cub images. The youngsters were wrestling with a stray pillow in the lower branches. Meanwhile, their mother had claimed a higher perch where she could watch over them and the plains.

She chose a broad, angled limb and settled along it with complete ease. Her front paws folded, her tail hung loosely and her muscles stayed relaxed but ready. From this position the leopard resting high in a tree could see both her cubs and any movement on the horizon. Every now and then she glanced down at the “little rascals” as they kicked and bit at their new toy. Then she closed her eyes again, confident they were safe.

In this frame she lifts her head into the late light. Her whiskers glow and her rosettes shine against the rough grey bark. The clean blue sky and the strong line of the tree turn a simple resting pose into a calm portrait of a Serengeti mother leopard.
