Story Behind The Photograph

This photograph of a leopard stretching on a tree was made in the Khwai region of Botswana. It was early morning, so the air felt cool and the sky was a clear pale blue. A young female leopard had spent the night resting in an old apple‑leaf tree. She was calm and completely at ease with our presence.

As the light grew stronger, she finally decided to move. First she opened her eyes and looked around the floodplain. Then, very quietly, she rose to her feet and walked along the branch. In the next moment she stopped, pushed her claws into the bark and began a long, slow stretch.

In this frame the leopard stretching on a tree curves her back in a perfect arc. Her front paws reach forward, her tail lifts for balance and every muscle shows through the spotted coat. The bright morning light and the clean sky make the pose look even more elegant.
