Nxai Pan National Park in Botswana is known for its wide, flat pans and scattered islands of trees. Wildlife often gathers on these open spaces where visibility is good. On this day, a pride of lions had settled down in the short grass near the waterhole. A male lion was courting a female, and his focus was entirely on her.

Meanwhile, a small group of giraffes moved slowly across the pan behind them. They paused to watch the lions, keeping a safe distance but clearly aware of the big cats. Their tall shapes rising above the horizon added a wonderful secondary story to the scene. Story Behind the Photograph – Lion and Giraffes

I photographed this scene during a calm afternoon in Nxai Pan. We had been following the pride as they moved between shade and open ground. Eventually they settled in the short grass. The male lion began to seduce one of the females, nuzzling and rubbing against her. I positioned the vehicle to keep the pair in the lower part of the frame and to include the giraffes behind them.

As the lion lifted his head and looked straight at us, the giraffes lined up perfectly in the distance. I used a wide aperture so the lions remained sharp while the giraffes stayed soft, creating depth without distraction. The result is a piece of african wildlife wall art that feels both intimate and expansive.
