In Makgadikgadi Pans, meerkats and other suricates are always listening. Even when they rest, their ears and noses test the air for danger or opportunity. On this day the family had been moving through the grass in front of me. After a while, one youngster climbed onto the edge of a mound and paused, head turned to the side as it listened.

I stayed still and watched as it settled into this simple, elegant pose. The meerkat’s profile, the curve of its back and the wide horizon behind it all lined up for a few seconds. That quiet, alert pause, full of space and possibility, is what I wanted to hold in this meerkat photo print.
