In Makgadikgadi Pans, even the youngest meerkats begin to learn the role of guardian. While adults dig and search for food, youngsters watch and copy, taking short turns on lookout duty. On this morning, the family was spread out across a patch of new grass after the rains.

This little suricate stepped forward and rose up in the grass, eyes bright as it scanned the plain. For a few seconds it stood very still, whiskers catching the light, looking both fragile and determined. That sense of a tiny guardian taking its role seriously is what I wanted to hold in this little guardian print.
