Story Behind The Photograph – Young Suricate Learning To Guard
On the Makgadikgadi saltpans, vigilance is shared work. Adults and youngsters all learn to stand on lookout while others feed or play. On this morning the meerkat family was gathered around the main burrow, moving in and out of the entrances as the light softened.
This youngster climbed onto a small ridge of sand and slowly straightened its body. It held its paws close, almost shyly, but its gaze stayed focused on something in the distance. For a few moments it looked every bit like a tiny guard on duty, taking its role seriously. That mix of sweetness and responsibility is what I wanted to keep in this little meerkat on the lookout print.
