Story Behind The Photograph – On The Ground With Hyenas

This image was made in Mana Pools, in the magical forest that so many photographers dream of. Early in the morning my group and I found a small clan of hyenas moving quietly between the tall trees. The light was still gentle, and the air felt cool and still. Instead of staying in the vehicle, we slid out and lay flat on the ground as the hyenas walked our way. From that low position the whole scene changed; the dust, paws and legs suddenly filled the frame, and the forest rose high above us.

One cub in particular was very curious. It came forward again and again, sometimes veering slightly to one side and then returning to the same path. Because we stayed low and relaxed, the hyenas accepted our presence and remained with us for quite a long time. I watched this cub choose a line straight towards us, framed by a soft arch of trunks and light. When it lifted its head and stepped into the brightest patch of ground, I pressed the shutter and caught this simple but powerful walk along the morning path.
