This image was made on a calm morning when the light was still soft and low. For a long time the plain seemed empty, and then this brown hyena appeared, already in motion. It did not pause or look at the vehicle. Instead, it kept its own line, weaving between low bushes and moving straight through the open space in front of us.

Seeing a brown hyena in the open like this is rare. They are mostly nocturnal and very shy, often returning to their dens or rocky shelters before daylight becomes harsh. This individual, however, stayed in the open just long enough to reveal its full shape and character. I framed it in profile so the long mane, powerful shoulders and striped legs were all visible in one clean stride, capturing the feeling of an animal that knows exactly where it is going.
