In much of the Kalahari there is only one main sand road. Lions know this. They use the track as an easy path through the thorny bush. The road also helps them avoid sharp grass seeds and, as far as possible, snakes hidden in the scrub. Therefore, it is common to meet lions here at first light or late afternoon.

This male was part of a coalition of two brothers. Together they patrolled a long stretch of territory. They walked huge distances, often in the cool hours of morning and evening. While they moved, they regularly stopped to scent‑mark, scrape the ground and listen for rival males. Their presence kept other coalitions away and helped keep their pride of females and cubs safe.

Story Behind the Photograph – On Patrol

I met these brothers many times on the same Kalahari road. Often, I would round a bend and see one of them already walking toward me, head low and eyes calm. On this particular morning the light was soft and the bush behind him glowed in gentle greens. I stopped the vehicle and waited, keeping low to maintain the eye‑level view.

As the lion approached, I used a long lens and a wide aperture. This kept the focus on his face and paws, while the surroundings turned into a smooth, dreamy backdrop. He never changed his pace. He simply walked past, intent on his patrol, then disappeared again down the road with his brother.
