In Makgadikgadi Pans, meerkats are masters of their environment, always aware of the wide, open spaces around them. On this morning, the family was moving across a freshly green area after the rains. I positioned myself low to the ground, allowing the meerkat to rise above the horizon line.

This young suricate paused, its head turning slightly to the side, as if taking in the entire panorama. For a few seconds, it stood perfectly still, a tiny sentinel against the immense sky.
