Story Behind The Photograph – A Curious African Wild Dog

Painted dogs, or african wild dogs, are usually a blur of motion as they trot and run together in their packs. However, every so often one dog pauses, caught between one stride and the next. In this moment the painted dog balancing act appeared almost like a dancer, all long limbs and alert ears.

I was lying low to the ground to keep the angle as intimate as possible. When the african wild dog glanced back, still standing on one leg, I pressed the shutter. The result is a painted dog portrait that feels both graceful and slightly mischievous, showing the lighter side of this endangered painted wolf.

Elegance, Movement And Character

What makes this painted dog balancing act special is the mix of movement and stillness. The lifted paw, the bent back leg and the raised tail all suggest that the african wild dog will move again in the next heartbeat. Yet the calm look over the shoulder lets us study its markings, posture and personality.
