Story Behind The Photograph – After The First Hunt

Painted dogs, or african wild dogs, often make their first kill very early in the day. After they have fed, they do not always rest right away. Sometimes the pack starts to move again, looking for the chance of another hunt. This photograph shows one painted dog running out ahead, full of energy after the first kill of the morning.

I watched as the pack spread out over the open ground. This painted wolf passed close in front of me at a light trot, completely focused yet relaxed after feeding. I lay low to the ground so that I could keep the horizon low in the frame, allowing the soft blue of the distant escarpment to rise behind the african wild dog. The result is a painted dog portrait that combines movement, open space and a sense of the wider landscape.
