Story Behind The Photograph – Eye To Eye In Mana Pools

In the open forests of Mana Pools, the wild dogs often settle on bare patches of sand between the trees. On this morning the pack had paused, and one painted dog chose a low, flat spot to lie down. Instead of staying in the vehicle, I moved to the ground and waited quietly at a respectful distance.

After a while the dog lifted its head and watched me. It did not feel threatened; it simply observed, ears turning to catch sounds around us. The low angle brought my viewpoint to the dog’s level and kept the horizon down, letting the green of the distant trees rise behind it. When its gaze settled into this calm, almost regal pose, I pressed the shutter.

Shape, Detail And Simplicity
