Khwai transforms during the green, or emerald, season. After the first rains the bush softens and the dry browns of winter give way to fresh grass and rich colour. On this day the painted dogs were moving through the area, weaving between patches of bright green.

I waited for a moment when one individual stopped clear of the busiest vegetation. When this wild dog turned its head towards me, ears high and eyes calm, the background fell into a perfect soft blur of green. That contrast between the cool, lush backdrop and the warm tones of the coat was exactly what I hoped to capture, so I pressed the shutter.
