Painted dogs (also known as African wild dogs or painted wolves) spend much of the day sleeping in the shade. But when the light softens in late afternoon, everything changes. One dog stands up, stretches, and then the whole pack follows. They rush towards each other for a greeting ceremony, a whirlwind of licking, nuzzling, high‑pitched calls and playful bites.

I had been waiting quietly for this moment, knowing that once the first dog woke, the rest would follow. As they gathered, I framed the scene for movement rather than detail. I wanted the viewer to feel dropped into the middle of the painted dogs greeting at dusk, surrounded by motion and noise and flying tails.

Joy, Dust And Constant Movement

What I love most in this image is the sense of pure joy. Painted dogs are often called nature’s most efficient hunters, but scenes like this reveal their softer side: the family bonds, the play, the excitement of being together again after a long, hot day.
