Story Behind The Photograph – Morning Play At The Den
The morning began cool and misty. As the light slowly softened, I found a group of hyenas running and playing on the road near their den. Cubs dashed back and forth, adults trotted in loose circles and the whole clan seemed to enjoy the quiet start of the day.
One cub discovered a twig and started to treat it like a prize. It pounced, chewed and carried it, completely absorbed in the game. A nearby female – almost certainly the mother – watched for a while and then joined in. She picked up another twig, teased the cub with it and moved just out of reach. Because she kept the game light, the cub followed her eagerly, learning balance, timing and confidence with every step.
In that moment I pressed the shutter. The angle of her body, the set of the cub’s ears and the soft, misty background came together in a single frame that felt like exactly what it was: a playful lesson.
