I photographed “Powerful Descent” near a carcass site, where vultures circled patiently overhead. At first, they kept their distance. The light was soft, and the air felt heavy with anticipation. Then, one lappet-faced vulture finally committed. It folded its wings slightly and began to drop with purpose.

I followed its path through the lens as it descended, coming closer with every wingbeat. In that brief moment, everything lined up: the angle, the light, and the sheer force of the bird’s approach. I released the shutter just as it opened its wings again to slow down, capturing this powerful mid-air pose.

This image reminds me of the important role vultures play in the African ecosystem.
