Story Behind The Photograph – Suricate Watching The Plain

On the wide Makgadikgadi saltpans, meerkats are rarely distracted. Even when they pause, they continue to listen, smell and watch. On this morning the family had spread out over a patch of fresh green after the rains. Some were digging, while others moved slowly through the grass.

At one point this young suricate stepped onto a small rise and stopped. First it listened, then it leaned slightly forward, eyes locked on a distant movement. For several moments it did not shift its gaze at all. That quiet yet intense concentration is what I wanted to capture in Pure Focus – a simple portrait that shows how alert these little creatures remain, even in gentle light.
