Story Behind The Photograph – Young Suricate On The Mound

In Makgadikgadi Pans, meerkats and other suricates use raised mounds as safe places to rest and scan the landscape. On this day the family had been foraging in the grass around me. After a while, one youngster climbed onto the top of the mound and settled down, still alert but clearly taking a break.

I stayed very still and watched as it tucked its body into a tight curve, then slowly turned its head to look back over its shoulder. For a few seconds the wind dropped and everything felt quiet: the distant horizon, the clouds, the tiny figure on the sand. That gentle, watchful stillness is what I wanted to hold in this meerkat photo print.
