I took this photograph during a memorable evening in the Okavango Delta. We had been tracking a pride for some time. We found this magnificent male lion resting in the long grass. The sun was just beginning to set. The light was already turning that incredible deep red. This only happens in Africa.

I positioned the vehicle for a clean profile shot. The red sky was the backdrop. The challenge was to capture the intense light on his face and mane. I also wanted to convey his calm, powerful presence. I focused tightly on his head. This allowed the details of his fur and scars to be part of the story.
