This image was made near Khwai in Botswana, just after sunrise. The grass was long and soft, beautiful to look at but not ideal for a classic, sharp portrait. When a herd of zebra began to move across the floodplain, one animal lagged slightly behind and then broke into a run to catch up.

Instead of fighting the conditions, I decided to work with them. I slowed my shutter speed and followed the zebra with the lens, matching its movement as smoothly as possible. The long grass blurred into golden streaks, while the zebra’s form stayed clear enough to anchor the frame. In this photograph, the surroundings fade away into pure colour and motion, leaving the sense of a single animal focused on rejoining its herd.
