Story Behind the Photograph – Botswana Rhino

I made this photograph at sunset in Botswana, near a waterhole where rhinos often come to drink. The day was drawing to a close, and the light was turning that magical golden-pink that only African sunsets can deliver. We spotted the mother and calf as they approached the water. The calf, tired from a day of foraging, soon lay down to rest beside its mother.

The mother remained standing, her head slightly lowered, constantly scanning her surroundings. Her posture was a clear sign of her protective nature. I positioned myself to capture the intimate connection between them, with the beautiful horn of the mother prominent against the soft sky. The challenge was to convey both the peacefulness of the scene and the underlying vulnerability of these animals.

For me, it embodies the hope that these “last rhinos” will continue to roam the African plains, safe and protected, for generations to come.
