Matusadona National Park, on the shores of Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe, is renowned for its stunning sunsets and abundant wildlife. The combination of the vast lake, the drowned trees, and the dramatic African light creates a truly unique photographic environment. This particular evening was no exception, offering a spectacle of colour and form.

The air was still, and the only sounds were the gentle lapping of water and the distant calls of birds. As the sun dipped towards the horizon, the sky erupted in a blaze of colour. The water mirrored this intensity, creating a seamless canvas of light. An elephant emerged from the bush, walking slowly towards the water’s edge, perfectly completing the scene.

Story Behind the Photograph – Kariba Elephant Silhouette

I made this photograph on the shores of Lake Kariba, within Matusadona National Park. We had spent the day exploring the area, and as evening approached, I knew the light would be special. The petrified trees, always a dramatic element, seemed to come alive in the fading light.

As the sun began its descent, painting the sky in incredible hues, a lone elephant appeared. It walked with a quiet dignity, its silhouette perfectly framed against the fiery backdrop. I quickly composed the shot, ensuring the elephant was positioned to create a strong focal point amidst the skeletal trees and the glowing water. The challenge was to capture the immense scale of the landscape while still highlighting the elephant’s solitary presence.

It captures a moment of profound peace and the raw, untamed essence of the African wilderness.
