Story Behind The Photograph – Suricate In The Meadow

In Makgadikgadi Pans, fresh grass after the rains turns parts of the desert into open meadows. Meerkats and other suricates weave through these patches as they hunt for insects and small prey. On this morning I lay flat in the grass, waiting quietly while the family worked their way across the field.

This young meerkat slipped into view, its body almost disappearing in the soft blades around it. It paused for a moment, listening and sniffing, then carried on moving through the meadow. That combination of movement, softness and focus is what I wanted to hold in this meerkat photo print.
