In Makgadikgadi Pans, one or more meerkats will often stand upright while the rest of the group feeds. These sentries scan the horizon for danger and call out if they see anything unusual. On this morning, the family was scattered through the grass in front of me, busy searching for insects.

This young suricate stepped up onto a small rise and slowly straightened its body. It stayed there for a few moments, ears forward and nose testing the air, clearly taking its turn on watch. The combination of its proud stance and the huge sky behind it is what I wanted to hold in this standing meerkat portrait.
