The Makgadikgadi saltpans can feel almost infinite. On windy days they are harsh and empty, yet on still mornings they become gentle, with soft colours and a wide, glowing sky. On this morning the meerkat family moved between patches of grass at the edge of the pans. Some were busy digging, while others paused to scan the horizon.

This young suricate stepped into a clear gap and stopped for a moment, perfectly outlined against the blue sky. It looked very small compared to the space around it, but also completely at home.
