I made this photograph on my last trip to Botswana, in Chobe, while photographing from the Pangolin boat. It is a specialised photography boat, built for photographers, with gimbals and chairs that turn all the way around. That means you can follow action quickly and shoot from almost any angle without fighting the boat.

We were quietly watching the water when the hippo suddenly came up close. In one movement, it broke the surface and pushed water forward, forming a wave that wrapped around its head. At the same time, droplets and spray caught the light, and the moment turned into something graphic and dramatic.

I chose black and white because it matched the mood perfectly. With no colour to distract, your eye goes straight to the expression, the shape of the head, and the energy in the water. This is real wildlife photography, captured in the moment, in the wild.
