Story Behind The Photograph – Trusting Intuition

For more than a week I could not find the dogs. Every track seemed to fade into the bush, and each drive ended with the same frustration. One late afternoon my friend and I were winding through the forest, and I said, half joking and half desperate, “They could be right there in that ditch and we wouldn’t even know.”

He stopped the car. “What are you doing?” I asked.
“We are going to look in that ditch,” he replied.

We climbed out, peered over the edge – and there they were. The painted dogs were lying hidden in the hollow, exactly where my instinct had imagined them. I just stared in disbelief while my friend smiled and said, “I always trust a woman’s intuition. You should trust your intuition too.” Those words stayed with me and have guided me many times since.

A little later the pack began to stir. The adults rose first, then the pups tumbled up out of the ditch, muddy and eager. This photograph shows the moment the adults walk over to greet them, heads low, tails relaxed, sharing quiet contact before the energy of the evening takes over.
