Story Behind The Photograph – Waiting For The Approach

We first saw the pack far off in the distance. They were crossing the open ground in our direction. Instead of staying high in the vehicle, we climbed down and lay flat on the earth. By doing that we could keep the horizon low and let the escarpment across the river rise gently behind the dogs.

As the pack came closer, one wild dog moved slightly ahead of the others. It walked straight towards our position, ears wide and body loose but focused. For a moment it paused, checked us and then continued its slow, steady walk. That was the instant I chose to press the shutter. The image shows a wild dog on the move that still holds the calm, open feeling of the landscape around it.

Forward Motion And Clean Space

What stands out in Wild Dog On The Move is the mix of motion and space. The african wild dog’s long legs and narrow body create a clear line of movement, yet nothing in the frame feels rushed. The ground stretches out in front of the animal, and the soft shapes of the other dogs behind it add quiet context without stealing attention.
