Story Behind The Photograph – Running Through The Green

During the emerald season in Khwai, the grass grows long and vivid. The wild dogs move quickly through it, often half‑hidden except for the flash of a head or tail. Instead of fighting the movement and vegetation, I decided to work with it.

As one painted dog broke into a run, I followed it smoothly with the camera, using a slower shutter speed to blur the grass while keeping the body of the dog relatively clear. The rhythm of its stride and the flowing texture of the grass came together in this frame, turning the chase into an almost abstract sweep of colour and shape.

Green Season Colour And Flow

What stands out in Wild Dog Panning Shot is the feeling of flow. The african wild dog’s warm coat contrasts with the cool greens around it, yet everything moves in the same direction. The long grass streaks diagonally across the image, emphasising the speed and path of the animal.

Because the background is completely blurred, there are no distractions from branches or horizon lines. The viewer’s eye simply follows the dog’s body from nose to tail, experiencing the sense of running through deep grass.
