Description
Wild Dog Pups Playing – Planned Chance And Pure Joy
Wild Dog Pups Playing shows two african wild dog pups mid‑wrestle on open ground. One pup stretches forward with front legs braced, while the other rears up, mouth open in a playful shout and paws wrapped over its companion’s back. Dust lifts beneath their feet and the background melts into soft, natural colour, so every line of their bodies is clear.
Story Behind The Photograph – Choosing The Right Place
That afternoon the pack was resting in very bushy cover, not ideal for photography. From experience I knew that when wild dogs wake and begin their greeting, they often move to an open space where there is more room to run and play. So instead of staying with them in the thicket, I took a chance.
I looked around the area and picked a patch of open ground with a clean, distant background. Then I lay low and waited, hoping they would choose the same spot. When the dogs finally woke, they did exactly that. The pups ran straight into the clearing and began to play, giving me both the behaviour and the background I had imagined. This frame, with the pups caught at full stretch and full laughter, became one of my favourites.
The image was later recognised with a Highly Honoured award in the prestigious Nature’s Best photography competition, which made the moment even more special.
Energy, Lines And Background
What stands out in Wild Dog Pups Playing is the mix of wild energy and clear design. The long legs of the african wild dog pups form strong diagonal lines, while their raised tails and open mouths add a sense of movement and sound. Yet the background remains smooth and uncluttered, so the viewer’s eye stays on the pups without any distraction from branches or shadows.
Warm tones from the earth echo the colours in their coats, while cooler hints in the distance add depth. The low‑level perspective puts you right on the ground with them, sharing their game rather than looking down from above.

My love for the Painted Dogs
I care deeply about the future of painted dogs, also known as African wild dogs or painted wolves, and I work with the researchers and conservation teams who protect them. My support for their vital work currently focuses on raising awareness through my photography, social media, and this website, helping to share their stories and encourage donations to their projects.
