Story Behind The Photograph – Quiet Time At Mana Mouth

At Mana Mouth the riverbed had dried, leaving a broad stretch of soft sand and shallow hollows. The pack rested there during the heat of the day, and the pups used every quiet moment to explore and play.

These two youngsters found a small twig and turned it into a game. They chewed it, swapped it back and forth and then settled side by side, still sharing their prize. I lay low in the riverbed to get to their level. When they paused like this, looking at each other with the twig between them, the scene felt both funny and tender, so I pressed the shutter.
