Story Behind The Photograph – Following The Pace

Wild dogs rarely stand still for long. Once they start to move, they cover ground quickly and with purpose. For this image I chose not to freeze everything. Instead, I followed the dog with the lens as it ran past, matching its pace and letting the slower shutter speed blur the world behind it.

It took several passes to get the timing right. Often the head was sharp but the legs blurred too much, or the background streaked in a way that felt messy. Then one dog ran through a patch of warm light with a clean line of trees behind. I tracked it smoothly, pressed the shutter at the peak of the stride, and everything came together in this single frame.

Motion, Warm Light And Clean Lines

What stands out in Wild Dog Running is the balance between detail and blur. The african wild dog’s patterned coat, ears and face remain recognisable, while the legs and tail dissolve slightly into motion. The background becomes bands of soft brown and gold, echoing the colours of the dog without distracting from it.

The sideways movement leads the eye across the image from left to right, giving the artwork a natural flow. Because the horizon and trees are blurred, the dog seems to glide through an abstract landscape of light rather than a specific place, which makes the piece easy to live with in many interiors.
