Story Behind The Photograph – Pause On The High Ground

In Mana Pools the dogs had just finished their evening greeting, a rush of running, circling and calls. After the chaos they climbed to this high point and settled for a moment. From here they could see the forest and river beyond, choosing their direction before the night’s hunt.

I positioned myself below the ridge so that the wild dogs would stand against the glowing sky. As the sun dropped, the light behind the trees turned into layers of orange, pink and purple, while the foreground fell into gentle shadow. The pack paused just long enough for their bodies to arrange into a loose arc along the slope. Soon after this frame they took off again and, not long later, brought down an impala.

Forest Glow, Silhouettes And Scale

What stands out in Wild Dogs At Sunset is the atmosphere. The african wild dogs are small compared to the tall trees and wide sky, yet their presence is strong. The glowing canopy behind them adds drama without overpowering the animals, and the varied poses – standing, lying, walking – give a sense of calm readiness.

The composition leads the eye from the pup in the foreground up along the line of dogs to the bright opening in the trees. Soft blues and greens in the deeper forest balance the heat of the sunset, creating a rich but harmonious palette.
