Story Behind the Photograph – Female Bateleur Photo

I created this female bateleur photo on foot in the Kalahari. She was perched in a dead tree above the road, relaxed and alert. I approached very slowly, taking a few photographs after each step and pausing to let her settle again. Because she stayed calm and did not show signs of stress, I moved a little closer each time, always ready to stop if she seemed uneasy.

At some point I realised I was almost too close. If she chose to take off, her wings might not even fit inside the frame. I took a final step, lifted the camera and waited. Then, without any rush, she opened her wings and launched into the sky, flying right over me. I followed her through the viewfinder and pressed the shutter as she passed, capturing this powerful yet graceful moment of bateleur eagle flight.
