Story Behind The Photograph

Young African Leopard Walking In Khwai began with a quiet drive along the edge of the floodplain. We were following tracks when a young african leopard walking in Khwai appeared from the grass and started moving straight toward the car. At first he was only a faint movement in the pale stalks, but as he came closer his spots, whiskers and bright eyes came sharply into focus.

He was clearly hunting. Every few steps he paused to listen, tasting the air and searching for the slightest sign of prey. Instead of detouring around us, he passed so close to the vehicle that I could hear his breathing. Then, just as he drew level with the front of the car, he stopped. The leopard turned his head, lifted his gaze and looked me directly in the eye.

That single glance held curiosity more than aggression, a wild animal checking, measuring and then deciding we were not important. I pressed the shutter while his mouth was slightly open and his whiskers pushed forward, wanting to fix that intense, questioning expression of a young african leopard walking in Khwai and exploring his territory. A moment later he turned away, scanned the grass one last time and continued his careful search along the Khwai river.
